Frequently Asked Questions...

Concerning EPDM

What does EPDM stand for?
ETHYLENE PROPYLENE DIENE MONOMER

What is the difference between EPDM and 3 layer built up felt systems?
An EPDM system is a single layer of synthetic rubber, cut to size and then adhered or ballasted to your roof. We guarantee this system for 20 years. A 3 layer built up felt system is layers of bitumen based felt applied using hot bitumen and then covered with granite chippings. This system normally carries a 10-yr guarantee

Is EPDM more expensive?
No. We guarantee that EPDM will work out cheaper than a 3 layer built up felt system

Is EPDM suitable for my roof?
Almost definitely yes!  We have yet to find a flat roof where EPDM was not a suitable option.

Can I walk on my roof once an EPDM system is in place?
Your roof can be walked on occasionally as long as there are no stilettos or window cleaner’s ladders!!  To ensure a fully trackable surface, we recommended the installation of additional rubber tiles, which are designed especially for this purpose.

What guarantee do you offer my new EPDM roof?
All our EPDM roofs are guaranteed for 20-years.

Why don’t all roofing companies offer EPDM?
While more companies are now offering EPDM, we install FIRESTONE Rubbergard® EPDM and have been trained by FIRESTONE at their Head Office in Brussels. Only trained installers are allowed to be recognised as authorised contractors.

Concerning Asbestos

What is Asbestos Cement?
Asbestos cement is a mixture of cement and asbestos (usually about 10-15% of the total product) forming a hard material often used as corrugated roofing on sheds, garages, farms and industrial units.

Is my corrugated roof made from Asbestos?
It is sometimes difficult to tell the difference between an asbestos cement product and a low-density insulation board. Where the product has been used as a roofing or cladding product, open to the weather, you can be confident that the product is asbestos cement. Manufacture of all low-density products was stopped in the late 70’s and since they were not weather resistant, if they had been fixed outside they would have broken down long before now.

Is my asbestos roof dangerous?
All Asbestos is dangerous, however, roofing sheets are made from Asbestos Cement, which while still hazardous, does not release as many fibres and is classed as relatively low risk.

Do asbestos cement products have to be removed?
No, asbestos cement products are very durable and are likely to last for many years. However, if they need to be removed this can be done without a licence or specialist firm, although care must be taken to minimise any fibre release.

Can I remove the asbestos myself?

Asbestos Cement Roofs are often very fragile and not weight bearing so we do not recommend anyone without experience to carry out any roofing work. Do not take chances with Asbestos and NEVER walk on Asbestos or Asbestos Cement.

Do you need a licence to remove asbestos cement?
No, a licence is not needed to remove the asbestos although the disposal of it has to follow strict guidelines. We are aware of these guidelines and take the necessary precautions when removing asbestos. As long as the removal is done according to these rules, it will never fall into the category where it must be notified to the enforcing authority (HSE or Local Authority depending on the premises) this would only happen if there was likely to be exposure beyond the “action level” given in the regulations. THIS ADVICE ONLY APPLIES TO ASBESTOS CEMENT.  OTHER ASBESTOS MATERIALS ARE MORE DANGEROUS AND YOU SHOULD NOT ATTEMPT TO REMOVE THEM WITHOUT SPECIALIST ADVICE.

Can I dispose of the asbestos myself?
If you are a homeowner, you are quite within your rights to dispose of the asbestos yourself, however, you will still need to abide by the strict guidelines laid down by HSE to dispose of this product safely and correctly.

How will you dispose of the asbestos?

As we have a waste carriers licence we can either transport the sheets to the nearest licensed waste site, or arrange for a licensed asbestos removal skip company to site a skip at your location for safe disposal of the asbestos cement. It is necessary to comply with the special waste regulations 1996.
